New IMO Rule: CO₂ Detection Now Mandatory for Enclosed Spaces
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued the new Resolution MSC.581(110), mandating the addition of CO₂ detection requirements and further tightening safety detection standards for enclosed spaces on ships.
Three Fatal Gas Hazards in Ship Confined Spaces
Cargo holds, ballast tanks, sewage tanks, fuel oil tanks, chain lockers and other enclosed compartments feature extremely poor ventilation and stagnant air. As high-risk confined spaces aboard vessels, they harbor three major fatal gas hazards:
Risk of Suffocation Due to Oxygen Deficiency
Grain fermentation, fire-extinguishing agent leakage and cargo decomposition continuously build up carbon dioxide. Colorless and odorless, CO₂ displaces oxygen inside compartments, easily suppressing human respiration and causing syncope or suffocation accidents. It is a hidden and easily overlooked hazard on ships. Insufficient oxygen concentration can result in fatalities within a short period.
Risk of Poisoning
Hazardous gases such as hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide impair the body’s oxygen supply function and trigger chemical poisoning.
Risk of Fire and Explosion
Volatile combustible gases from oil and chemicals may accumulate to explosive limits, and ignition will occur upon contact with static electricity or open flames.
DTSC005 Marine Pumped 5-in-1 Multi-Gas Detector
In response to the new mandatory CO₂ detection requirement under the IMO regulation, DUOTESI has launched the DTSC005 pumped 5-in-1 multi-gas detector. Equipped with dual infrared sensors for CO₂ and CH₄ together with a long-life oxygen sensor, the DTSC005 marine pumped 5-in-1 multi-gas detector delivers a service life of up to 5 years. Its detection specifications align with the latest maritime standards, building a robust gas safety barrier for confined-space operations on vessels.
Detection Ranges and Alarm Settings
