Smart Manhole Cover

With the acceleration of urbanization, municipal public infrastructure has developed rapidly. The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development issued the “Notice on Further Strengthening Safety Management of Urban Manhole Covers,” requiring departments including urban water supply, drainage, gas, heating, real estate (property management), electricity, telecommunications, and broadcasting to implement digital management of manhole covers, thereby enabling effective oversight of public resources and ensuring public safety.

According to incomplete statistics, the number of manhole covers nationwide reaches hundreds of millions, serving critical infrastructure systems including water supply, street lighting, drainage, telecommunications, gas distribution, heating, fire safety, sanitation, real estate, and road construction. Each year, at least 15 million new or replaced manhole covers are installed across the country, translating to an average of hundreds of thousands per city with annual additions and replacements exceeding 20,000 units.

Currently, most manhole cover management relies heavily on manual labor for inefficient operations. By adopting intelligent solutions like those implemented in science parks to replace manual inspections, not only can significant workforce savings be achieved, but operational efficiency will also be substantially improved. Additionally, sensor devices with low power consumption can operate continuously for over five years, while smart manhole covers effectively reduce maintenance costs.

The intelligent manhole cover management and monitoring system can monitor and trigger alarms for gas concentrations such as flammable gases, oxygen, and hydrogen sulfide within the manhole cover, ensuring the safety of personnel entering the area. It transmits data on gas levels, temperature, humidity, and other parameters to the monitoring center via detection units, and activates an alarm when harmful gas concentrations exceed safe thresholds.

Since multiple gases require monitoring beneath manhole covers, the module must integrate several high-precision intelligent gas sensor modules. The gas sensors and modules provided by Gongcai Network cover combustible gases, oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, carbon monoxide, methane, TVOC, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde, among others, offering reliable support for environmental system monitoring in smart cities, smart factories, and urban underground utility tunnels.

With accelerated urban development, safety and functional requirements for manhole covers and their underlying environments are increasing significantly, making intelligent manhole design an inevitable trend.
